Good Morning Athens, I hope you have a wonderful and relaxing Friday! This morning you can see some beautiful cirrus clouds if you look up. You can expect it to be quite hot and humid today with heat index values up to 100°F.

This is due to the sinking air around Hurricane Florence but you won’t see any other effects from the storm here today.

Let’s get into our tropical update: Hurricane Florence made landfall near Wrightsville Beach in North Carolina at about 7:30 a.m. EDT this morning. The storm is expected to head inland west into South Carolina. The rainfall rate in some locations has been measured at 3 inches an hour. This storm is still very dangerous, as there is a significant freshwater flooding risk for areas inland. If you have family or friends in the area please tell them to listen to their local authorities and stay safe!

As for the effects on Athens, the risk for dangerous winds has decreased since the last update. The Hurricane has taken an inland route rather than an ocean route towards our area. This means that Florence will weaken considerably before getting to Athens. At this time, the effects from Florence will simply make for a fairly normal rainy windy day. There may be a few stronger guests that could take down some smaller branches. We could see about an inch of rain with the system, which won’t be enough to cause any significant flooding. Still keep an eye out for updates and listen to your local officials because things can still change.
